Heat will work and do look for the tack weld that is very important. The hammer approach works but make sure you protect the hands and wrists of the one holding the bar. Sledge hammer to hand or wrist does not feel too good. One thing is to make and off set for the person to hold on to the bar, also i put a small tip on them so that it will stay on the center of pin. Also do not make too long of a rod otherwise you will get a lot of warping each time you hit it and not transfer the power to the pin. I have used old axle shafts for this type of job. One thing have you tryied a comealong to compress the adjuster. On the back side there is a pipe plug that relieves the pressure. If the rod is halfway clean you can pushit forward just enough to get the bolts off and the rework the seals and the shaft. Another approach is to use the torch and cut the center out of the pin and then knock it out. Works but the master pin is toast. There are also special purpose rod that you can drive right through and do that. A if you find a protable track press, the will need to have the tooling of that crawlers. You can make a portable press but they can be dangerous and fickle to opperate. I have made a number of custom presses to take things a part and have had on occasion, failures and stuff really flies.
