350B stripped input shaft question

Does anyone know if the transmission input shaft can be removed without removing the trans? I removed the reverser and motor from machine, the coupler and reverser shaft look O.K. but the transmission shaft is toasted. I see no sign of a snap ring that should have been there. This may be what caused this mess. The book shows the shaft coming through the top of trans housing. How hard is this to do? and is it expensive? Thanks Steve

Hey Steve, glad you found your problem, but bad news is tranny has to come out, best I can remember (not looking at a book) the tranny shaft is actually the pinion shaft that turns ring gear.

Thanks for the input. I went to John Deere today, and bought a new coupling "50.00". I asked the service advisor about the input shaft, he said "I can remove the shaft through the top cover of the trans without removing the trans". Do you think something like this is available somewhere else? John Deere wants 600.00 just for the shaft!@#$#@.
My only other option is to weld part of the old coupling onto the new one , so the coupling would be longer and go about an inch and 1/2 onto good splines still on shaft. I lost about an inch and 1/4 off the front. "bald". These couplings are case hardend, and my local machine shop was'nt very helpful.

Steve thats a common practice in your case buying a new coupler then cutting it and making it longer to get to the good splines, but ya gotta be careful you get it lined up exactly before you weld it or it wont last long it will break at the weld, I'd look for another machine shop someone willing to help.

Boy Steve, sorry to hear about your findings! Glad though that you did. Sounds like you got right on it! I have never done that job, (yet) But I would say, from looking at my book, that the tranny has to come out, and also apart. Its beyond me, so you may find someone to do this for you at a shop. I found some guy, who will work on the side for me, and he is a mechanic on dozers during the day. Good Luck!

I am in Northeast Pa. If any one is interested in making some side cash. It sucks doing this alone.
