It sat for 2 years but ran fine prior to sitting. What type of maint. is needed to get the old cat running. If I can't get the owner to start it or hire someone(with my money) to start it I will more than likely do the work on the machine. It's a good deal ($$) if it all works. I have to travel a pretty distance to pick it up and I want to be prepared once I get there. The owner can get it on my lowboy but I have to get it off. I would like to dive it off...but if I can't get it running what method would you use to extract it from the trailer?

What serial# prefix, Dir elect(24 volt) or starting eng?
I'll watch the board for a while.

Alabama got your ears on. Check your oils, probably have already, get sone new gasoline, clean the plugs and maybe squirt a little oil into the cyl's of the starting eng. You can boost the starting eng with your car or truck.
That done put the starting eng trans in low range, diesel on decompression and roll her over for a while. Next, stop turning the diesel, shift to high range, turn the eng over, put on compression, turn somemore to heat up the cyls, then pull the fuel on and it should start.
If the diesel dosen't start and white smoke comes out of the stack, the cyls are not hot enough yet, shut off the fuel turn over some more until exh is clear for a while then try again. Either only as a last resort.
It may take some time getting it running first but it is worth it.
Good luck Bob

You might have to bleed the fuel pump if it wont start. This is done easily if you have the right Cat wrench for the job. You bleed teh pump by opening the bleeding plugs that are located behind the fuel lines on the pump, do this with the motor turning over, and keep it open until fuel comes out of the hole. Repeat for each cylinder. Then it should start right up.

Good point Scott, slacking the fuel line will also work.

Alabama,
My book sayes you tractor is a 1968. Also, I would bleed the fuel filter housing first by opening the vent valve on top of the housing and then the fuel injection pumps. If you don't have the type of wrench for the pumps, you can crack the line on top of the pump (same thing). When the flow of fuel from the vents is continuous and no air bubbles close the vent valves, and she should fire up, if not let her warm up a little more, and she should light right up. Hope this helps.

Alabama,
Sorry about the year I just posted, I was wrong, your trator would be a 1939. I just read the wrong date. Sorry about that.

Usually the pony motor is the hardest one to get started, once you get that going use low range to motor the main engine over with throttle off till you show oil pressure on the main engine, then put in high range and open throttle slightly should start firing, put decomp. lever to run. You can also move it with just the pony motor leave the trans in low range so its turning the main motor over and operate the cat as you normally would.
