Just got my crawler, How can I tell what model it is? It was suppose to be a JD 40 c. But it has a radiater and looks like 5 rollers possibly a 2 speed gear box for the 4 speed. SO how can I tell? Are serial numbers somewhere?
thanks
jack

On my JD40C there's a tag on the left side of the engine (from the driver seat) below the starter/battery area.

Now there is a oil stack on the left and on the right (top) which one is the fill pipe? Also how do I drain the hydraulics? Any help aprreciated.

Jack,

The oil vent cap on the top of the engine is the filler as well. Be wary here. Inside there are baffels, I have found a wad of steel wool in there, placed by others to control blow-by. So should you try and add a quart you will find it running over the top of the filler instead of going into the engine.

On the under side of the hydralic tank is a drain plug. Should be 1/4" pipe thread with a square 7/16' size head. The system uses Engine oil, NOT Hydralic fluid.

TonyK.
