I have A 1951 Cat D2. The tranny leaks oil and I was woundering what kind ouf fluid it takes because I put some hydrostatic transmsison fluid in it and now the clutch is slipping. I was woundering if the fluid had anythig to do with the clutch or is somthing else wrong. Also does anybody know were i can find manuals for this dozer?

Thanks, Nathan C

you need to put 90w in it, but you can also run non detergent 30w

The trans. takes 90w gear oil. The UTF you put in it is much thinner and probably leaked out of the seal twice as fast, and ran into the clutch causing it to slip. You will have to replace the seal, drain the trans and refill with the proper oil, and clean and adjust the clutch. Your Cat dealer will be able to order the manuals for you.

I just bought a D2 with a slipping clutch. The owner said it needed to have a new clutch disc because he couldn't tighten it enough to avoid slipping. Upon examination I discovered that a pair of the flat links that connect the sliding collar to the fingers that engage the pressure plate are broken. (There are four pairs of the flat links.) In effect having one pair broken would make less pressure on almost half of the pressure plate. I replaced the broken links today and found I still had plenty of clutch adjustment so think I got off easy! Sooo---just one more thing to check!
