I need to replace the axle bearings in my 480 b backhoe . Looks to me like the axle will have to come out because there is no nut to relese the hub on the outside to slide bearings over the axle . If this is the case how should I go about this ???

Open the tear drop shaped hatch on rear of transaxle ,remove cotter pin and large nut and washer from axle. Hit outside and outwards on flange of axle with large hammer and axle shaft will come out. Inside bearing cone will fall down by the bull gear or could stay in place, just hold it in position behind bull gear when reinsatlling.Install large nut and washer, tighten nut semi tight, hit axle on outside flange inwards to make sure bearings are seated. check nut and tighten semi tight, and then tighten one notch more and repin.

I have a 580C, which I guess, would be similar in construction. To get the axle out of mine I had to open the rear end housing by removing a cover from the top. Then, I had to remove the nut and gear from the inside end of the axle. You should be able to pull the axle from the outside at that point. Hope this helps.
