What should I buy?

I need help deciding what tractor I should buy. I have 5 hillside acres of former avocado grove here in San Diego. Some areas are pretty steep. It has switchback roads cut in that are about 10' wide for picking access. The grove was let go 15 years ago and the trees were cut down, But the stumps are still there. The biggest stumps are about 10" diameter. I want to clear it and start over. The soil is dirt/DG and somewhat rocky, kind of loose, with boulders here and there. Not going to try to move anything bigger than about 36" dia.

What would you guys use for this job?

Thanks in advance-
Alex

Find you an old 690 or 690A JD trackhoe. Good older machines. I still have an old 690A at a pit and runs like a top. Should be in the $6k to $12K range.

Before you consider forking out the money for a fixer upper of a machine that will cost you any where from $1000.oo to $20000.oo to buy and who knows what type of work it needs done to it after you get it home. Get a quote from some local contractors with an exavator, job would be done in a day or two for under $1000.00.

How much do you know about older equipment, repairing and operating? The last thing you wanna do is roll a small cat because of a lack of experience working machinery on side hills.

best of luck,

Hi Alex,

it all depends on your budget, of course. Mine mandates low end. My Cat 933 would have no problem with your job. I had a JD 440 that looked like it would, but doing similar work I got LOTS of practice replacing the bearings in the final drive. Not a well-balanced machine. But we're talking 8000 lbs vs 16000 lbs. The Cat's got big enough bearings for the weight and the engine. In Va. the rule of thumb is $20,000 for a decent used tractor. Both of mine together were only half that much. The reason most people do better hiring the work out is, with an old tractor you either get greasy occasionally or sell it after tiring of paying for a mechanic. But if you always wanted to have a crawler, this is a great opportunity! Good luck.

Here we have a grey market Komatsu dealer, He imports top machines and they arent really grey market, the regular Komatsu dealer here has told us this already, whn my older brother had his construction company he had a D 20 and a D 31 P the 20 is the same size of a D3 Cat But has a maunual trans mission or some times a power shift. it was 9 000 dollars. The 31 P had a power shift and was 14 000. Both only had minor troubles trans mission filters. That was only one time cost about 250 per machin to replace. We traveled with them 4 years and they never let us down.

Hi Taylor, where's "here"? Those Komatsu's sound interesting. I only have use for a loader. Recently had the misfortune of getting a $5000 repair of my Cat tranny. From an independent shop. Got not quite 3 days out of it. They don't want to hear about it. Turns out they forgot to tighten the top shaft bolts. When it quits snowing I get to winch it up to my shop. Also got lucky on a 20ton trailer at auction so am considering a larger tractor. Gotta fix the 933 first so it has some value. Unless those loose bolts screwed up a gear, shouldn't be too bad. The most expensive gear in there I couldn't get from Cat and had to get custom made. Oh, yeah, having fun.

Yes you are right about the 933. I just about bought one, but the problem was with that gear and from what I hear is that is what goes on that machine. I hope you do not have too much trouble. That is a no fun situation to be in. My old AC and IH stuff is about as bad, but if you can wait for a while, the parts should turn up somewhere.

Been too much snow here this winter, soon it will gone and I will get my HD9 complted UC rebuild with new tracks done. Yet. Funn with old machine. Yes getting greasy is part of the fun and the hassle.

Good luck

Hi Bill, as for the double gear in the 933, the shop looked for 6 weeks for a used one. Found a few they didn't want. When my machinist was making it, he found something really odd with the old one. It didn't match any cutter he could buy. He thinks the old gear was too tight and maybe what caused the problem in the first place. I don't remember how many thousandths he was talking about, not many. I'm incredibly fortunate to have found a retired guy with all the machinery he needs to do anything. I do a lot of running around and hauling for him so we no longer trade cash. Called yesterday to say he's finished with the adapter to mount a Continental fan on a Ford 300 for my Linkbelt. He's also not online. REALLY excited when I found a parts manual for his '38 D6 on ebay. He did have to sneak in the back door of the GE plant he retired from to use their tempering oven for my gear.

You may very well be right about the weak point in 933's. I know where there's another one sitting, bad tranny and a rebuilt engine, that the owner decided not spend any more money on. As it was rebuilt by the guys who did my tranny, I don't want it either. Been some winter, eh?
