Will a Cat 7UD4 out pull my 1973 John Deere model 450? The 450 has the 219 engine.

In a dead pull, the heavier machine is going to win. All other things equal; both on equally worn tracks, etc. Crawlers pull between 80 and 90% of their weight. For getting work done, speed is the key and speed comes from HP.

In a dead pull, the D4 will probably outpull it. As far as work done, we had a 7U, the 450 will have the job half done before you even get the D4 started.

I heard a story about a man who trade his D4-7U for a John Deere. A preacher came along and bought the D4 -7U to use on his farm. The preacher could not get the D4 to start and call the man who sold it to him. The preacher was given the telephone of the previous owner of the D4. The preacher called the previous owner and asked for advice in starting the machine. The previous owner asked the preacher what steps had he taken in starting the starting engine. The preacher gave him ever step in detail. The previous owner told him that he always spoke some bad words, did some cursing, while attempting to crank the starting engine. The preacher's reply was that he was a preacher and had forgotten how to curse. The previous owner told the preacher to keep trying and it would all come back to him.
