I have a chance to get a HD 5. Are the motors in these things any good? I know there were a lot of them out there years back. Do they have any unique problems? How large of a disc can it pull? any info appreciated.

An HD5 will handle a 7'6" disc in the hills and an 8'3" disc on the flat.

Damn good machines! I wouldn't trade it for a new one.(I might) Easy to work on and not too bad on parts.10 gal of fuel all day working pretty hard. Mine will spin the tracks all you want in first and for a few seconds in second gear.it has my recomendations.

I recently bought 2 HD5's 1 for parts. I am in the middle of getting 1 running. So far I have rebuilt the blower (seals bad) got the motor unstuck. replaced rod bearings (just because I had the pan off)have 2 injectors on order from GM. ($58 ea) the parts for the motor are easy to get from Detroit Diesel and I can't complain about the prices. I hope to try and start it for the first time over the turkey day weekend.

My first semi had a 8V-71, 318 Det. I loved it. That two cylce music is special!! For the price I hope you consider putting in the main bearings as well, an HD-5 could be about fifty years old. If you are a good workman it will not leak a drop of oil. While often sneered as leakers and wheezers, properly assembled, they are not. They also have gobs of torque, especially at low end.
