I have a old 955 cat with a hand clutch, The problem Ihave is I have to hold the hand clutch back very hard to get the crawler to pull. I have been told I can adjust the clutch to solve this problem. Why will it not stay in gear ? If so how do I do it?

Mike, the hand clutch needs to snap over center to engage. It should take about 30 Lb to do this. You need to take off the cover and unlock the clutch and tighten the rear piece/spider against the pressure plate then lock it up again. I think there is a 1/2" bolt and nut locking the spider, loosen this, rotate the spider clockwise untill the clutch snaps over center and then tighten up the bolt.

Bob the cover you are referring to is the one under the clutch handle? Paid 1500.00 for it last year and it has already paid for itself on my farm. The motor runs great, but tracks and rollers are not to good. Do you know the HP of this Cat.? Also my steering handle are feeling a little weak, could that be due to low fluid or do they need adjusting? Thanks for your help Bob, I'm an electrican, and need help from a mechanic sometimes!

Mike, email me with your serial# and I will try to get a pic or two for you. What do you mean by the steering levers being weak? The clutches not fully releasing?
