I have a 70's model backhoe that takes on an engine strain when the main boom is raised. It operates ok but it seems that the pump may be weak, when the heavy digging comes in the pump seems to bring the engine rpm low, how do I find what the problem is? where can i get a replacment pump? thanks Richard

Richard,I don't think you have a pump problem, it sounds to me like an engine problem. What type of pump does the machine have on it?

Richard,.. Does your hoe have a safety lever to the right of the hoe controls ? It will be a small curved metal lever with a black ball on the end. It is a safety that will not allow the main boom to raise or lower. Try moving that lever up. It might free up you boom and take that strain off of the engine. Just a thought ?
See ya,..... .out.

I would check all the filters, fuel, air,and the inner air filter. I have seen hyd filters in Ford backhoes collapse and suck together. Check for a pinched hose and a kink in the steel lines where they run under the machine.
