I am restoring a 420 track loader that has been rebuilt a few times in its lifetime, the undercarrige is in really good shape but the track pads are on backwards on one side for some reason.Has anyone ever seen this before or were they just put on backwards by mistake.

No good reason, just a mistake. Much as I hate to admit it, walked in the shed and looked at one of mine one time and realized I had both tracks on wrong.

Speaking from first hand experience - last fall while working, the LH track was too loose and came off. Depending upon where the master link is located when the track falls off, there is a way to get the track on backwards that is easier than putting it on back the way it came off. Since I had a TLB and tractor, I just lifted the side of the 420C with the loader bucket and dragged the track back into the proper position with the tractor. Without this additional heavy equipment, and wanting to get back to work, the previous owner probably just left the track that way.
