I have a TD6 which appears to have a starter that is not the right one for this tractor. The drive gear only appears to ingage into the ring gear about one quarter of an inch. This starter does not appear to be original because it is soilnoid operated. Replaced it with a starter from another TD6 which is original equipment but also only ingages about i/4 inch. Are there diffrent lengths of starters for these tractors?
Thanks in advance.

On my TD-6 the distance from the surface where the starter mounts on bellhousing to the front edge of ring gear teeth is 2 1/4 inches if that is any help.

The electric start is just a bit newer on that and that should not have an effect on the engagement of the ring gear.

There exists the possiblity that the ring gear may not be on the flywheel properly. That is a press fit part. If it has ever been replaced it may not have been fully seated or may have moved a bit. There should be a seat on the flywheel and the ring gear should firmly abut that.

The engine on that is the md or super md engine depending upon the model you have. IH was known to have serial number breaks and will use different parts for different serial numbers

Hope that helps
