Tranmission Cooler

I have a D31 Komatsu dozer that lost steering and would not pull after warming up. I dropped the belly pan and removed the cartridge type screen from the transmission, cleaned and put in new fluid. It works great now, but transmission fluid and dipstick are very warm when I checked fluid level. I am wondering if the trans cooler is functioning properly? How is a good way to check this? Thanks in advance for any help.

I have a powershift tranny on my machine (old IH 150 loader), and the transmission oil temp ranges from about 180 deg F on a cold day up to 215 deg F on a hot day. If you have a hydrostatic drive system, I dont know what those temps run. But I would definitely consider anything over 150 deg F "very warm", which in the case of a powershift is ok (within limits).

Are your gauges working properly? What do they say and what are the operating limits for your machine?

And one other thing, you may want to check the oil cooler and make sure the fins are not bent up or clogged with dirt, grease, oil, leaves etc. Make sure there is good airflow through it. My machine was running a bit warm for this reason, powerwashing the dirty radiator (and oil cooler) increased airflow and significantly cooled things down.

good luck

Thanks Seann, I just finished power washing everything and am currently trying to get the temp guage to work.
