I"ve got a D4D that I belive has leaking liner seals, got water in the oil. I was told I could remove the liners so as to change the seals with out dropping the oil pan,(wood wedges between the piston & sleeve turn crank to lift sleeve from block)so I was told. Has any one ever heard of or removed liners in this manner? Any and all comments regarding locations where water could enter, sleeve replacment or ? will be greatly appreciated

If it has has antifreeze in the water that's geting in your oil you had better take pan off and take a look at the rod and main bearings as antifreeze will eat them up pretty fast.

I think they are thinking of an older tractor with a D315 engine. Anyway before you get into it too deep, make sure it's not the water pump leaking the coolant into the oil pan. You still need to drop the pan and plate to see what is going on then presurize the cooling system and see where it's coming from. Now if you have to drop the oil pump the ballancers need to be timed when you put it back up. Any piston on TDC and the bolts into the ballancers through the plate when the pump and idler gears mesh with the crank gear.

Just curious- if you did get them removed in that manner, how would you compress the rings to reinstall the liner? No matter how you turn the crank, the pistons would still be below the level of the block.
