AC HD6E clutch problem

I have a problem with my clutch and I'm needing some advice. I have an HD6E Dozer serial number is in the 11,000 range. The problem is, I'm having a problem with clutch engagement. When I pull the stick back it wouldn't stay locked back. Since it hadn't been replaced or rebuilt since I had it. I hired a dozer mechanic to take it out and I sent it off to be rebuilt. We reassemblied it and tried to adjust the clutch to the correct pressure when the lever is pulled back to engage the clutch but I still have a problem with the stick not staying back or if I adjust it slightly it won't move the dozer. It seems to be a fine line between to much and not enough pressure on the clutch lever. The mechanic has adjusted it as much as he can in both directions and we just cann't get it to work. When I say it won't work I mean it won't break over and stay locked back. If I tightened it up to drive it'll go but you have to pull real hard and hold it back which is impossible when your trying to steer it. Any suggestions would be very helpful? I've been working on it off and own all summer and I really would like to get it going again.

When you say you adjusted the clutch did you adjust it on the linkages or the clutch itself? Obviously, there are adjustments to be made on the linkages from the engagment stick to the bellhousing. There is also the adjustable toothed disc inside the bellhousing which actually controls the pressure plate pressures. There is one release bolt on the clutch disc assembly which, when loosened, will permit the correct adjustment of the adjusting ring. Usually the movement of only one tooth will do the trick. Make sure and retighten the jam nut when done. By the way, there are three jam nuts on the clutch assembly but only one will loosen, the other two are cotter keyed in place and won't do anything but frustrate.

We loosened the one bolt your mentioning and retighted it before we started it up.We ajusted it up, tried it and then adjusted back, trying to fine a point where it would work. Do you think we may have possibly put the clutch plate in backwards and if so would this prevent us from fine tuning the break over point? We did not adjust the linkage outside the housing on the clutch lever.

The overcenter clutch unit has a number of steel plates with holes on either side that are like finger extensions. These 'fingers' have holes in each end with a clevis pin and corresponding cotter keys to hold them in place. These clevis pins can wear quite a bit and cause excess 'slop' in the engage/disengage stroke. I would check those next for clevis wear and elongated holes in the 'finger' pieces. Make sure and note the direction of the clevis in the finger bore. The head of the clevis has to go in the direction of unit rotation otherwise the centrifugal force of the rotation will wear the cotter key and the pin(s) will fall out. If needed, replace both the finger and clevis at the same time. Don't forget to check the bore in the throwout bearing cage that receives the clevis pin for wallowing also. Hope that helps a little more.....
