I have a 1959 jd 440 buldozer. the throw-out and final drive bearings were just replaced. when we reassembled, there was no power to that track only the left side would turn. (this also happened before the final drive was reworked). we pulled the inspection covers and the pinionshaft and fibre disks were turning, but the pressure plate acted like it wasn't holding enough pressure on the discs. we removed the final drive and adjusted the clutch all the way and it helped a little. does anyone know how thick the fibre discs shound be and what the minimum thickness is to replace them. also is there a gauging tool to set the clutches at the right holding pressure so you don't have to pull the final drive off and on a bunch of times? for now, i'm doing circles!

The fiber discs are .151 thick when new, steel are .095. The gauge for setting the clutches is OTC JD7, should be available through John Deere service tools, or your local Snap-On or Mac distributor can sometimes order as well.

Hi Skip.

The disks should be about 3/16" of an inch new, the metal plates are about .100" new as well. Add them up for your total. Most will add another plate and disk to make up the difference.

As for ajusting the fingers you can do it on the machine, I have because I didn't have enought pressure to keep the group from slipping. (without pulling the drives,)

If you need more information email me.

Hi tony, Thanks for the info., i will check it out. have you ever heard of the tool made to adjust the clutches? I wonder if some one was pulling my leg? Do you adjust the clutch through the round side inspection holes or down through the top, just wondering what is the easiest way?

I have a 1959 jd 440ic crawler loader. I just replaced the fiber disks on my right steering clutch, about $350. However, im trying to find out the correct adjustment measurements for the clutch fingers(3 on auburn clutch)
