I have a Cat 977 (1955-1958) SN 20A149 with
steering probs, will not turn eighter way.

I check the oil in the steering clutch valve
body. (little if any oil in it) Could this be
the prob.??? Is the steering clutch hydro. or
manual operated?

Thanks. (New to the cat world.)

When you pull the steering clutch levers back ,do they snap and not retun foward or do you to push them to return foward. Have you tried adjusting them ? You might have bearing problems on the piviots and release center hub . Like HALFTRACK saidto make sure your brakes are adjusted right . The 977 wil not steer if the clutch want release to allow the brake to hold so the mechine can turn.

G., your post is a little short. You say it does not turn either way. Do you loose power, meaning does the engine rpm's pull down, when you step on the brake? If yes your clutches are out or out of ajustment. There could be other facters, but let's start here.
Get in the back or top of compartment & BACK off set nut & acorn nut on the threaded part hooked to the linkage run by your booster. On these brakes you back the ajustment OFF & not take it up. Now just run it up by hand just to touch yoke. If its ajustment that should make it work. If not post more what's going on or not going on. HT

HT: Yes the engine rpms pull down when the brakes
are depressed. I noticed that the yokes move very
little when the steering levers are pulled back.
(how much should thy move?)

Thanks - GL

GL,do not know that answer, but not much. But maybe the brakes where not ajusted right to begin with. For know do what I said in the first post. Make sure the acorn nut is in it's seat, don't use a wrench, just by hand if it's free on the threads. I still have other thoughts, but lets go one by one. HT
