Have a JD 420C crawler that both steering clutches slip badly on.Deere wants a lot of money for the fibers and disks.I think I read on here one time about adding an extra fiber to the clutch pack ,does anybody know what the width of a good clutch pack should be?I dont want to add to much

Dave,
If the fibers are oil soaked, they will need to be replaced. Otherwise, order an OTC JD7 clutch adjustment gauge from your local Deere dealer and adjust the pressure plate fingers with it and it will solve the problem. Adding an extra steel is a shot in the dark, and while it will work, it is just as easy to do it correctly.

new parts: clutch composition facings .145 - .151 in.
clutch steel plate .090 - .096 in.

should be 7 comp facings and 6 steel plates.
manual does not indicate min/max pack height.

info comes from publication # sm2019 available from john deere

no indications re adding extra
