after replacing fiber clutch plates,on left and right sides, and reworking both pressure plates, it still won't disengage(unless seat is removed to allow left clutch stick to come back even further.have adjusted out to the max; it will then begin to release somewhat. the release bearing appears to be removing pressure from the prssure plate, but the clutch resistance tends to feel a bit differnt than the right side. plus there is a popping noise when left clutch is pulled towards the operator Any Ideas??

Also, raw oil is blowing out muffler at idle
and run speed. Appears to be more than just a ring job... Any suggestions....???

Thanks in advance, T.C. GOD BLESS THE USA!!!

dad operated one for years.i use it today.a good machine.we did public work and made our living that way.steering clutches require adjustment during installment/use.if you have made the right adjustment to the pressure plates during installation, send me a fax # and i will send you the instruction from the operators manual.you'll need a ruler and a speed wrench.

how much free travel do you have (the point from where the steering lever rests to the point where the throw out brg. contatcs the pressure plate)if this is excessive it will make it act like your describing also i'm not really familiar with 440 steering but does it have an adjustment on the pressure plate itself to set the finger height (will make it contact T.O. brg. sooner and have more travel)

I just went through the same steering trouble - fixed it (the popping) by lengthening the actuator rod between the steering lever shaft and the casting that the holds the throwout bearing. lengthening the rod seemed counterintuitive, but you can't argue with pragmatism.

good luck

Probably a PO had shortened the rod, thinking it was the way to adjust the free travel.
