want to rebuild the bucket cylinders on a jd 450 loader, took the spanner nut off, drove the end cap in just enough to get the snap ring out, and pulled the rod out, but could not get it to come out all the way, put a cumalong on the eye and put all the tension on we could get on the cumalong, the rod will not come out, drove it back in and pulled it back out but will not come all the way, do i need more tension or does anyone have any ideas or tricks to get this out?

Yank that puppy out of there... I usually use a large enough diameter pin , hook up the come-along around the pin , put some load on it , and tap on that pin . It should come out of there doing this...

Get the rebuild kit, there should be an orange split ring in the kit.
That orange split ring is then inserted in the barrel, filling in the snap ring groove, to allow the packings to pass the groove without catching, or hanging up on the way out.
When you re-assemble the unit, install the snap ring, then put the orange ring around the threads, for next time, then install the nut.

Tom, i have the rebuild kit but there is no orange ring in there, in other words the packings are hanging up in the groove where the snap ring goes?

The newer cylinder kits have the ring in them . That would be cylinders for newer machines.. They have a deeper snap ring groove and need that "spacer" ring to fill the void to disassemble.. Do as Roy said ... but a pin thru the eye and put pressure on it with a come-a-long... and then hammer away.. All you will be doing is forcing the packings across that groove... with the right sized hammer it can be done..
