Hello all!! New to the forum.

I'm looking at starting up a part time business of cleaning out ponds, pushing brush/trees, also maybe doing some dirt work (cutting driveways, basements, etc), nothing to big.

I would like a Cat 953 but they are too expensive for someone just starting out. However i've found a couple of mid 70's Cat 955L's that are in good shape. What are the pro's and con's of a 955L? will they hold up? and are they about the right size? Are there bad things I should look for on these types of machines?

Also have looked at some 941B's, pro's and con's on this machine too, please.

I would have to agree with all the other replys you got. I would like to add that crawler loaders are very heavy, and can get stuck quite easily if you are on soft conditions. I had a 941a for two years, it was a great machine. look for the usual stuff..ie excessive wear on the undercarrige weak trans or converter good steering clutches and brakes bad rollers or idlers. hope this helps.
oh by the way, my cat had a 4in1 bucket.very handy for lots of tasks. it was in bad shape, as people tend to over use the 4in1 functions but that bucket actually got me un stuck a couple of times when i got stupid

I've never owned a Cat, but by all accounts the 941 and 955 are excellent loaders. Cat is generally regarded as the best (which is somewhat debatable, but not in terms of sales), and these two models certainly don't have a reputation for being lemons, that's for sure.

Basically the advantages of the 941 and 955 over the newer 953 types is that they are cheaper to buy up front (given comparable condition), and are generally cheaper to maintain. They have the earlier technology torque converter/powershift transmissions, which are very durable and long lasting as long as they are cared for properly. Plus they are cheaper to rebuild and maintain and are somewhat less sensitive to dirt/contaminates than the newer hydrostatic (hystat) transmissions (which is what a 953 has). The downside is that they can't work as fast as a 953, which can actually counter-rotate each of its tracks independently, thereby making it more maneuverable. And there are also some advantages to having the engine in the rear, which include better weight distribution and improved visibility for the operator...although I've heard mixed things about this, for some tasks a front engined loader apparently has it's own advantages as well.

But if you're a small timer just getting started, a good 955 or 941 will work perfectly for what you want to do. I have an IH tracked loader right about the size of 941 and it'll do everything you mentioned and then some.

Good luck

The 955L was the Rolls Royce of loaders,an excellent machine, well balanced, good mechanically, powerful and nippy,I cannot think of a bad thing to say against them, they have segment sprockets which is a big factor when undercarriage has to be changed,if you don't know what to look for on crawlers bring someone along that does to check it out for you as you need an eye for to spot some things,no matter how good any machine is if its abused throughout its life, that is the machine to walk away from.
Good luck
AJ
