I have been restoring a 1947 Farmall M, for my next project I would like to restore an old crawler. I don't want to anything to large...I would like to stay with IH but that is not absolute. Can anyone tell me from experience what I should be looking for in a small older crawler...

As far as IHC's go, the TD-6 motor is the same as a MD, and the TD-9 is the same motor as a WD-9
You could even drop a gas M motor is a TD -6 or gas 9 motor in a TD-9..... .....

One thing that i found was that alot of older crawlers get left without any cover on the exhaust pipe and the cylinders sieze up. you can sometimes get lucky and release the piston or remove the head and oil pan and replace the piston and sleeve. alot of parts for the motors are still out there and not that expensive. usually only one cylinder is stuck because only one exhausts at a time. I was able to free up a td35 and the undercarrige is in good shape. if you don't like big cats try a t20 or a td6 there like a d2 in caterpillar size comparison. good luck....

Buy one with a good undercarriage. If you get one that has a bad one, it will eat you and your checkbook alive.
Also, as hard as it may be to do, don't go buy something at a bargain price just to get the machine. Look around a little, and buy the best one you can afford to buy, this may save you from searching for some hard to find or obsolete part, and may save a few blood transfusions from bloody knuckles trying to take apart 50 year old rust. Just my 2 cents and worth exactly what you paid for it.

You mentioned you are somewhat partial to IH tractors, you may want to consider a T-20 crawler. I cant claim to to be experienced in this area, but I have recently aquired a running T-20, and have no regrets. I have been told that the T-20 shares the same basic engine as the F-20 wheeled tractor, hopefully between the two models, parts should still be possible to find; A T-20 weighs about 7000 pounds, so if you have the capability to trailer your M around, chances are you will be able to trailer a t-20 as well. A nice feature on the T-20 is the ease of access to the steering and brake clutches and mechanism. There is a cover on the rear of the tractor that when removed, exposes the brake and clutches, without having to dissasemble half of the tractors drivetrain. I was able to have my steering clutch disks relined at a local clutch rebuilder for a reasonable cost, hope to get it all back together this weekend. You can see a picture of a T-20 on the tractor pictures link at this website. There are also some photos at the ibdozing.com website on the projects page. The old crawlers are a kick to operate, a gentleman at a tractor show let me try his cletrac a while back and I got hooked, good luck to you.....Tom
