Anyone know anything about these little gray market Mitsubishi loaders? And specifically the one shown in the pic? It's a BS300 and it has a 2 cylinder diesel in it. Anyone know what kind of horsepower it has, how much it weighs, lifting capacity, age, parts availability etc?? Thanks in advance for any info.

There is a company in Alaska that specializes in grey markey crawler/excavator imports, since they need to import virtually everything up there. They mainly deal with Komatsus but it seems like they are fairly knowledgeable about grey market machines in general. You may want to check out the following links and maybe e-mail them or give them a call to see what they have to say:

The more I look at that machine, the more it looks like a hybrid of a W300 loader ,& a BS3 crawler.Where is the engine mounted...looks like it is missing??The BS3 units usually have a 4 CYL 4DQ or S4E engine.
Do you have more pics of this thing??

Jim the motor is mounted under the seat. It's a little bitty 2 cylinder diesel, you can see the radiator venting to the rear. You can also see the exhaust port on the right rear panel. I'll see if I can find more pics of it, but these things appear to be very rare here in the states. I imagine parts availability either is or soon will be a real problem. I'm guessing the engine has something like 20-30 hp, which is lighter on power than I had hoped. I'm thinking I might be better off looking for the more common front engined BS3F (or later variant). More parts availability and probably more power. You guys down under deal with these small jap crawlers right? Do you know what kind of power the mitsubishi 2 cylinder diesel puts out in this crawler? (and perhaps others) Also got any pics of your furukawa that you mentioned in another post? Wouldn't mind seeing what one of those looks like.

Hi SEANN,
Those handy little Mitsubishis have become common here in the past 10 years, but they are Grey Market tractors here too.I think there are more in the US than here. The local Mits grader agent can get parts in,but they are expensive. In the 70s,they were sold here, but no agents left now.
I got books thru Rhine Equipment,& their website shows they have other parts available.
That machine in your picture is the first I have seen in that layout...I think a 30HP/2cyl is very small to run a crawler loader. It must have been made to suit a certain application. The BS3F is about 40HP.
You might consider a Komatsu D21/D20...parts availability is better.
My Furukawa is a hobby machine ,ready to be repaired & maintained for use on my property. No pics available yet.It has a Mits engine,& looks similar to a BS3.
I'm currently dismantling an early Mits BS3.

Oh yeah, do you know of any good online forums/resources to learn more about these various gray market crawlers? I went to the one VaTom referenced below (thanks for the tip tom), but it looks like they mostly deal with gray market tractors there, don't see much about crawlers.

You're welcome and correct. No crawlers there, not even many with dealer-Mitsubishis like I have. Network was discontinued early 80's.
The current dealers are friendly though. If you didn't, ask them.

Regarding engine size, JD 440's are about that hp. They work, hauling 7-8K lbs, IIRC. Nothing I'd want to own again, but there was enough engine.

That's an interesting version of the BS3 series loaders.Maybe Rhine Equipment Co in Tecoma can help.I heard that Cat Worldwide may be marketing these units.

Short answer is: no, I don't know. Do know about gray market Mitsubishi rubber-tire tractors. Full support from the dealers. One forum has 2 dealers offering advice and parts.

If I recall correctly, there were some posts on the Gray Market forums at other tractor sites, to the effect that some dealers will not sell parts for gray market units...a little research on Mitsubishi forums might bring up some answers. Good luck.
