Alternator testing and reset button?

I put a new ammeter in and it does not move when starting or even turning the key on and then the dash lights. I took the alternator off to get it tested. It is a simple 1 wire set up similar to a GM. I went to 2 auto parts places and they couldn't test it because they need a computer code. The one guy said he preferred their old tester because they could test all the older alternators. I always thought it was a pretty simple test. I'll probably have to wait till Monday to get it checked. The wires go into the reset button in the dash of the Cat and then to the ammeter. This button has never seemed to do anything and doesn't even push in. It never did but the ammeter and charging system used to work fine. If this reset switch is bad will it affect charging or the ammeter? I'm just wondering in case the alternator checks out OK. Thanks. Dave

Just make sur eya get a internal regulator one. Thats what a one wire is. And if the mounts match a standard GM style will work. Our skid steer has a car alternator. Factory, but thats what it is (I repaired cars for years so I know one when I see it heh). Our is external however. You maybe able to just take the one you have go to junkyard and grab a substitue. Just so its one wire and mount holes are same your good to go. These arent high amp units so a car or truck alt will be plenty. Infact if you get a toyota celica or supra alt its almost 100amps. Lots of light can be run off that hahaha.

Dave put the alt back on and check for voltage at the output terminal while running at low idle. With wire off you should get well above bat voltage. If the reset is okay there will be bat voltage down at the end of the wire you hook to the Alt output. Later Bob

what mdl cat, I can probably E mail you a wiring diagram. if the reset button is not tripped it wont click. if it is tripped it will not start. Are you sure the Ammeter is wired properly.

It's a 931B Cat 25Y series. There is only 3 wires on the ammeter. 2 go to the + side and 1 to the - side. The new ammeter had the + and - terminals on opposite sides so I just switched sides with the wires. I'm going to take the floor plate off under the brake pedals to make sure no wires have shorted out. There was a terminal to plug into that wasn't used but was frayed a bit. I taped it up but I'll check to make sure it stayed protected. I put a small wrench by the alternator when I had the machine running and it wasn't attracted to the alt. Maybe I can find a place to test my alternator today and go from there. Dave

Just an update. The alternator isn't putting out anything and I'm just waiting to get the estimate. It's a Nippon Denso so it won't be too cheap but is a good alternator. Thanks for the help. Dave
