Cat questions

I was fixing my Cat and changed the oil today and noticed that the ammeter needle was shaking around. It was still working properly just wasn't steady. What would cause this? Later on it stopped jumping around. It's never done this before. On another note I noticed fuel leaking from around what I think is the fuel pump in front of the injection pump. Everything seems tight and I didn't want to make it worse by tightening any more. Would loosening the lines off and making sure they seat properly before tightening help or will it still leak. I'm worried loosening might make it worse also. Is it common to have leaks here? It's a later model 3204 recently rebuilt. It didn't leak before. Thanks for any advice. Dave

I think you fitted a new ammeter and rebuilt alternator a few months ago,if you kept the old ammeter you could use it to test the other, switch off the main switch and remove the main cable from the alternator, tape the end,put two leads with A/clips on to the old ammeter, connect the lead that comes from the + side of the ammeter to the alternator terminal, connect the other lead to the main + cable on the starter motor solenoid,(both terminals on the ammeter will be hot so protect them from shorting by taping them up)Start up and see if that clock is reading steady,if so the aftermarket one is gone to lunch,if not the alternator is sick, is it an injector pipe thats leaking, look at the seat and the nipple to see if they are damaged, you can clean up the pipe nipple with emery cloth.
Good luck
AJ

Thanks for the reply. The ammeter started working properly again. Go figure. I think they may have had the lines off when the engine was out the last time. I'll take the side panel off and loosen the lines and check the fit up and lightly sand it if it looks rough. dave
