I was just got done talking to a friend that was at the local junk yard a couple of weeks ago when a 1939 RD-5 Cat came in.It has a blade and ran not that many years ago.

I'll try and check tomorrow to see if its still there.I'm not interested but hate to see it junked.

To my knowledge Cat did not build an RD-5....Did build a 1939 D5 model 9M. Basically a D4 with a D4600 engine. Only some 46 built making it a pretty rare tractor.Only came in narrow gage.

Also built an R5 (gasoline version) up until 1940.

My friend said it was a 3 cylinder. He is more up on old tractors than Cats.Maybe its an R-5?

If its still there I'll look at it later this week and take a picture.

If it's a 3-cylinder and 1939 then it is an early D6 (D6600)....the RD designation was dropped in 1937

The R5 was a gasoline powered 4 cylinder, (well according to that little handbook by a somewhat disliked or criticized author) so maybe you've found an RD-6 or early D6 with a 3 cylinder diesel, photos will probably help figure it out.

The one O.M. describes, the 1 of 46 D5 model built for U.S. Forestry Dept. sure is an obscure model. One of them was found several years ago in nearby Vermont, was mostly complete too, someone named Andrew found it, had always wondered what became of it, he had posted about it on acmoc, kind of cool to see something like that turn up every so often.
