I ordered the new undercarriage for my Cat 931 today. Ouch! If I decided I wanted a bigger machine, what are the pros and cons of an older JD 755 and an an older Cat 953. I would think the JD might have a better engine than the Cats turbo 3204 but don't know about the rest of the machines. My neighbor had a 755 years ago and liked it. I don't know what they're like when they've got a few hours on them though. Someone at Cat, I think, said the hydro's were good because they either work or they don't. Just curious. I've heard good things about both, but wonder which would be better to buy in used condition, all things being equal. Dave

Some years ago,I operated both machines for a short while. The 755 Drott pushed very well & impressed me.
The 953 was good, but loved engine rebuilds & fuel.It was quick on it's feet, but therein is the problem. You really need to examine running costs against earning power, over a year & see where you end up.Cats are well bult, but they need to be ,to cover parts & fuel costs.
We replaced a major hydraulic hose on the 953 & it took a day to do it.

'70's- early '80's 755 average $8000 at auction. Same age 953 average $15,000. Thats gotta say something about how they last.

Cats usually sell for more. I'm not sure if it means they hold up better though. JD ag tractors sell for more but I don't think that means they're more reliabe either. What kind of problems are there with each machine? Dave

Hadn't heard anything about Cats but 755 is hydrostat & early failure was common. The expense of repairing them is more than the tractor is worth so they just sell them & get another machine.

953 Cat is hydrostatic as well. 755 came out in 1976. 953 came out in 81 or 82 after the 943 which came out in 1980 I believe. Maybe a 955L is a better machine used? Not as fast but maybe more trouble free or less headaches? Just thinking out loud. Dave
