I lost my clutch or one of the pads and was told I have to take the whole clutch out to fix it. IS that true? Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to do that? Any help will be appreciated. It is a dry clutch from 1949, a cable cat model.

You can replace a single link, but I would not
reccomend it. All the other 4 links are
streached. A new one will not be streached and
will take the full torque. It will thus fail
soon. Every time a link fails you take the chance
it will take out your starter pinion that lies in
its path and like a hammer mill will break off
this expensive part.

Removeing the clutch is very easy with the right
tools. I would strongly advise reading the book
about alignment two halves of the clutch. I think
it is no more than .015 in and out and .020 up and
down as measured by a dial micrometer. Each
revolution the links must move this much and will
heat up if out of spec very far.

I will bet there are lots of previous posts that
talk about this problem. It must be fixed by
moving the engine slightly. Buy the book, read
them or drop me a line or both. trust me it is
not rocket science-- Just C-A-T.
