Just bought a 1948 cub at an auction not running. There is no spark, filed points, cleaned out the dead spiders still no spark. Disconnected shut off switch, still no spark. Since it is a square coil is it a magneto? Help!!!

Glenn,
I agree with Dave. Replace the condenser first, they're cheap and easiy. Next suspect will be the points, then the coil. Can you hear the impulse coupling "click" while cranking? If not, you likely won't get much spark, if any. If it isn't clicking, that will have to be repaired first.

Hope this helps,
Phil

Your tractor most likely was equipped at the factory with a magneto. The "square" coil on top of the unit marks it as a magneto. When you bought the tractor, was the coil wire installed from the coil to the center of the cap where the plug wires originate? Has someone mounted another coil anywhere nearby? For testing the magneto coil, there is a procedure for using a multi-meter. If you can access any information on testing magnetos, the values shown on the meter may differ a bit from magneto model to model, but the basic procedure will be the same for all.

Check for voltage leading up to the distributor, if you have voltage their, it may be your condensor is bad. They can be working one minute and dead the next.....Dave T
