What's wrong with my friend's IH 1206 Turbo?

My friend phoned me yesterday with a tractor problem. Hope I got the model number right, I think it is a 1206 Turbo, not too familiar with any of the 'newer' numbers or the big, diesel stuff. Anyways, last summer he had a problem in that his steering and brakes suddenly packed it in on this tractor that he uses for seeding. He had been told to change the big filter that is on the side of the transmission down low by the rear wheels. We did that and zap, problem was gone. Everything worked well and perfect. He didn't use the tractor too much until the fall when he used it to operate a PTO driven vacumn machine to empty his grain bins. It sat outside all winter and when he went to start it this weekend, he had the same problem as last summer, no steering or brakes. Tractor runs well, just no steering or brakes. Not being familiar with tractors of this size or diesels or stuff with power brakes and steering, I thought I'd check here on the forum. Could it be possible that he needs another filter, or is something in his fluid (water) that is messing something up? It is still freezing here at night, so could water be in something? I'm driving out tomorrow so any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Thanks, MIKE.

Water or condensation freezing could certainly cause your problem. If the fluid hasn't been changed in a while it would be a good idea. If that can be ruled out the problem is likely in the multiple control valve or the pump mounted behind it. That pump operates the TA, the power steering, and the power brakes. There is another question related to this on this page of the discussion forum titled: 706 with no power steering... the hydraulic systems of the two tractors are the same. I posted a follow-up to that one also. There might be some information there that can help you. Good luck. If you have any questions you can e-mail me.

Mike, our 584 at the farm does the same thing, any impurities in the fluid and the hydraulics get slow and the steering goes. Did he have it hooked up on a hydraulic line to run something? I borrowed a neighbours tilt wagon one day and then went to the dealer for another filter, the fluid in some rams may be contamimated and that's all it took to clog my filter. My neighbour's old Allis didn't have a filtering system and so everything he owned that was hydraulic was poison to my tractor. I avoid hooking up my hydraulics to anyone else's machinery unless I know it is clean and filtered. Also A parts guy gave me the wrong screeen that goes with that particular filter and that created a heck of a problem. It took two trips to the dealer to discover what was wrong. We then decided it was time to change all of the fluid. If your buddy's tractor hasn't had a fluid change for a lot of hours...who knows. If your friend hasn't replaced the screen , get a new screen and filter together and I guess that will solve the problem. he should keep an extra filter around too..just in case... Good Luck Mike...Mike

Mike my speculation would be that there is frozen condensation in the hydraulic system.
