Was plowing this afternoon, with a Farmall 200. Suddenly noticed sparks around the starter pull rod where it goes through the tab on the headlight mounting rod on the steering post. Shut it down, and struggled to disconnect the battery - difficult with only a claw hammer and a 10" Crescent wrench. Had sparks flying!, Anyway, got it disconnected - almost destroyed the battey, the starter rod will never be the same again. It was red hot before it was over. Could've been a catastrophic fire. I did get some third degree burns, on the hands, will have to replace the battery, starter switch, battey cable, and starter rod. But, I came out pretty lucky, considering. I have inspected the starter switch and all the other parts, and I can't for the life of me find out what shorted. The starter rod, and the rocker on the starter switch were hot, along with the hinge pin on the switch. Anyone else have this happen? Any idea what shorted out? MAYBE A GOOD TIME TO LOOK OVER YOUR TRACTOR IN THIS AREA!

my neighbor had a short and fire under the instrument panel on his 364. he scurried to get the thumbscrews off from the gas tank/battery cover to get at the battery cables. he got burned a little, but got it off. now he has put a cutoff switch on where he can get it just under the hood. im planning to put one on both my tractors.

Take a look at the switch. There is an insulator material inside that prevents the contact strip from touching the case of the starter switch. If that was worn, it could touch. Also, ther is an insulated washer assembly to insulate the cable stud from the switch case, and that can deteriorate, or get broked if over tightened. My cub was like that, and I put a new switch on it. If you dont like the looks of a new switch on an old tractor, you can take all the new insulating stuff out of the new switch and put it in the old switch, and rebuild the old switch with the guts of the new switch.
The disconnect switch suggestion is a good one, if you dont mind the looks of it. I ususlly keep the ground strap at the battery untightend, and can yank it off if necessary.

I had a similar experience with my 300U except it was the choke cable that was smoking. Mine turned out to be a bad wire under the dash had created a short.

No evidence that either the rocker arm or the rod came in contact either the stud on top of the switch, the nut on the stud or the battery cable. I'm out of ideas! Thanks, Ray

One thing I am going to do, when I construct the new pull rod, and install it, it is going to be INSULATED from the mounting tab on the headlight bracket!

A lot of the state surplus equipment i purchase has a battery cut off switch on the ground cable to disconnect all power. sometimes this is because the equipment has a battery drain they can't find. but it can be handy. sorry you got hurt.

Yes, on a 450. Batt cable started on fire under fuel tank. It was a thrill.
