I have one of the first "M" farmall tractors. It was bought brand new by my Grandfather. It doesn't get alot of use now. I would like to use it more often but the govenor is stuck wide open. What is the procedure for getting it to return to normal operation. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks to all for the input.

Take the carb completely off.Look at the tube where the carb connects.Youll see a peice in there that has a slot. Its kinda U shaped. Then look on the carb where it connects to the tube.Youll see a little tang that fits into that slot.Make sure its back in the slot.Thatll cause it to run wide open.Seen that alot and done it myself a few times. Also take the breather tube off of the top of the governor and make sure nothing is binding in there.

Alan, we had a discussion about this a few weeks ago and I'll try to remember what was said. My experience with our 1939 M was that the tube connecting the governor to the carburetor(governor throttleshaft housing) was full of dirt , grease and would not allow the butterfly in the carb to float with the governor movement. Check behind the governor housing that dirt and grease have not built up behind preventing the throttle rod from returning. If the problem exists take the cover off of the governor housing and check the governor spring. With the engine stopped the governor weights should be together and at that point the butterfly should be wide open in the carb. You might have to undo the carb and just let it hang down so you can see the butterfly. Before you begin this process I would remove the hood and make sure that all moving parts of the throttle are free, it is possible that movement of the hand throttle may appear normal but movement is not occuring at the throttle housing. Those are some of the ideas that came along. Good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario
