Rear rims on H

After finding and purchasing my grandfather's old "H", I find that I'm going to have to replace the rear rims which are in very bad shape from calcium chloride leaking all over them for years. My manual says it takes a 10x38 rim. A fellow told me he could get me new 11x38 rims and that 1 inch shouldn't make much difference. The tires look almost brand new, but I forgot to look at the size. Would I be on safe ground buying the larger rims? Or do I need to know the current tire size before making that decision?

"Common" production H's came with 10-38 rear tires until about 1947 or 1948, then they started using 11-38's. They used a wider rim too, and probably most people like the look of the tractor with 11-38 tires(12.4-38 in today's sizing system which is based on tire cross-section width rather than tread width as before). You'll see H's with 11.2-38s on 'em too, and that's more "correct" for them if they're older H's. Just put 5.50-16's on the front, not 6.00-16's or larger-that's important to the tractor's looks(the height of the tires in balance with the height of the grill).

In the old days (and on cars now) the first number was the width of the tread and the second number was the width of the rim. Today's tractor tires are measured differently. The rim is still 38 inches across but the new 'first' numbers indicate how tall the tire is from the rim to the tread. Think of it as how far the rim would be from the ground if the weight of the tractor weren't pressing down on the tire. Bigger tires cost more, and change (slightly) your speed in any gear. They usually have deeper cleats which has it's advantages too. I have 14.9 X 38s on my H. (13 inch wide rim)

On my H I have 12.4x38, on a 11 inch rim and they fit and grip fine.

I am running 13.5s on 12" rims on Dad's ol H. This is not original but works real well with 150 pound wheel weights and no liquid weight. They will spin but the tractor is bogging down pretty well by then.

I don't like calcium carb liquid weight, hard to get in, hard to get out and rots whatever it touches (rims, truck bed, grass!)

The H usually came with 10 inch rims. The M usually came with 11 inch rims. Either will fit the other. Miller tire has both the 10 X 38 and the 11 X 38 rims listed in their catalog. You can save a little money if you go with the 10 X 38 and a 12.4 tire.

Two years ago I had Miller Tire mount new 12.4 x 38 Firestone tires on 11 inch rims and then they shipped them to Indy. They will fit fine. Hs came in 9, 10 and 11 inch width rims through the years.
