The clutch on my SMTA is loose on the shaft. Took it off planning on drilling it out and intallling a bushing. However discovered that the shaft is worn badly. Now thinking about removing the shaft the pedal is on and welding it and then grinding it back to it's original dia. My question is can I just pull out the shaft? Is there any internal transmission parts connected to it? Also would appreciate any other suggestions to fixing my problem.

I had the same problem with my SMTA. Took off the pedal as someone here once posted a part number for a bushing that would work. IH said it was a pitman bushing for an old mower or something. Anyway my shaft was worbn in addition to the pedal. Have seen new shafts listed for about 40$ but you will probably still need a bushing for the pedal as it is probably worn also. I was able to tighten mine a bit with some washers on the end, made a little bolt on angle bracket so the clutch pedal wouldn't slip past the edge of the platform and will fix it sometime. works ok now though. Have seen a lot of Ms and SMs with pieces welded on the edge of the platform so the clutch pedal stays in place. Assume it is a problem or that no one greased them enough.

I've got a problem with my clutch pedal catching on the T/A lever. I was thinking about attaching a braket to the pedal rather than remove the shaft. Haven't done it yet.

On my 400 I just had a machine shop put a bushing in the clutch pedal to take up the play. If you decide to go ahead and weld the shaft, it should come out of the tractor just fine, there is nothing inside attached. The only thing is that it might hit the tire or wheel, which would not allow it to come completley out without having to move the wheel farther out on the axel.

No problem , just drain the trans oil level down a littel or get a bag of oil dry for the puddel you are about to make on the shop floor. I made a new shaft for my S/MTA , they were just used tomuch when they were new.
