Hey, Finally got around to replacing a bad voltage regulator on my F - 140. I am having a hard time finding a 6 volt, negative ground regulator. My local Case IH dealer tells me that they never made a 6 volt negative ground system. Is that so? The system sure looks original. If I can't find a negative ground regulator(Have been to all the local auto parts & tractor supply stores), what do I have to do to change it to a positive ground system? Thanks in advance for your help.

Changing to positive ground is straightforward:

1 - Remove the cables from both battery posts.
2 - Swap the wires at the two ammeter posts (or you can ammeter wiring as is - it'll just read backward if you don't swap the wires)
3 - Install/connect the new regulator.
4 - Reconnect the battery with the POSITIVE post grounded.
5 - Polarize the generator: Momentarily connect the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator.

You now should be set to go...

Thanks Bob. Couple follow up questions to ensure I got this right. The regulator is the only piece of hardware that really "cares" if it is positive or negative ground? Do I need to drain the battery and recharge or does it not change anything with the battery other than which lead goes where?
Thanks again

You got it! Only the regulator cares whether you're positive or negative ground. You don't do a thing to the battery - just reconnect so the ground cable is on the battery positive (+) post.

Incidentally the ammeter doesn't care about grounding either - it simply reads backward (deflects to the left for charge and right for discharge) if hooked up with the ground reversed.

Now "have fun"!!

Bob if I`m not mistaken if you have a disturbuter ingnition system you will have to change the coil wire`s to or you will burn the points.

Hey Graytinker - Good catch! I forgot to mention changing the coil polarity...

On the other hand it's been my experience the coil will work fine and the points don't burn even even if coil primary polarity is wired backward. So there's no real harm if you neglect to swap the coil primary wires. ...Bob M
