Anti-slip cleat on H rim

Just bought new rims for my old "H". The new rims don't have the cleat that fits into the notch on the wheel hub to prevent slippage under heavy traction conditions. Question is, do I need to have this cleat welded on the rims if I'm only going to be driving the tractor around for fun? Don't anticipate using it for plowing or pulling or whatever. If I DO need it, does anyone have any tips for me on what to use, dimensions, etc? It looks pretty simple, but I don't want to mess up my new rims due to ignorance.

Thanks for the advice, guys, and thanks, Andy, for the measurements. It was exactly what I was looking for. Since I posted, I've talked to several others who all advise installing the cleat so that if I DO get into a heavy traction situation I won't have to worry about it.

We put new tires and rims on our H last year and the new rims didn't have the cleats. They have been on there a year without any problem. I have mowed the field 4 times and moved snow with the loader last winter with no problem. I think you need to watch to make sure the lugs are tight and it is not sliping. If you are not doing heavy work, I wouldn't fool with it.

In my opinion, the cleat should be welded to your new rims. I'm not all that familiar with H rims. but I seem to remember someone telling me that if the rim slips on the hub, the clamps can shear off the valve stem. Anyway, it can't hurt anything to put them on the new rims.

My 2¢,
Phil

I measured a few, there are at least two styles, but the easiest to make are two 3/8 plates for each rim, 1-1/4 by 1-5/8. The 1-1/4 dimension is across the rim, so the 1-5/8 dimension is along the rim, and the outside edges of the plates are 4-1/2 apart. The slot in the wheel is a little larger.

The factory ones are riveted on, two holes along the long dimension, so I would recommend drilling two 1/2 holes in each plate and plug welding the plates to the rim. That would look most like the original and should hold very well. No weld around the outside of the plates or holes through the rim.

If your rims are galvanized, wire brush it off before welding.

The plates are centered on the valve hole.

Of course never weld on rims with tubes or when aired up. Many people have been killed trying.
