Having a problem with the PTO on an IH 856. Using a spreader to plant and had trouble getting PTO to engage initially; had to work the linkage some to get it to engage. Planted one field and moved to next field and was unable to get the PTO to engage. Has anyone had this problem before? Does this sound like a linkage problem or something bigger? Is this something a somebody with a little mechanical know-how can fix or should we be heading to the dealer? Any info would be helpful. Thanks!

It sound to me that your valve stem is backing of , the valve stem sets the pressure on the pto. It take a special fitting to check the clutch lock up pressure , you can order one form Case IH you need a gauge that will read up to 600 LBS . When you start to pull the valve up just a littel you shoul have at least 35 to 45 LBS on the gauge then with the valve all the way in the up posision it should have about 225 LBS , myself I set them to 250 to 265 with the Hdy. oil warm about 140 degrees oil temp. then if you walk throught the clutches you got to many ponys under the hood. Just for the heck of it try turning the valve stem into the nut about 4 or 5 turns and see what happens. but do get someone to check the pressure .

It could be that the suction tube is loose or the seal on the piston that pushes on the clutch pack is leaking. When we overhaul a PTO unit we braze the tube to the loop that holds it tight. Most of the time someone brings in a PTO unit the tube is loose

Check your Hy-Trans level. My 1206 is very touchy when it comes to low Hy-trans and the PTO . I understand that it is not uncommon for the suction tube to crack on those. Just some thoughts.

We have the same problem with our 1086, which uses the same pto setup. It has something to do with the hydraulic enagement system. We haven't looked into ours yet but will soon need to. I imagine there is a bad oring in the shift Hydraulic shift mechanism and I don't think it is too involved. Our pto seems to work ok and doesn't slip once it decides to engage, does yours? If so, I imagine some patience and a couple of o rings will fix it.

The PTO worked fine and did not slip once it was engaged. Questioning the guys a little more, it seems that it went in fine the first time, the second time, they had to physically hold the leverage/linkage to engage the PTO, and then the last time, it would not engage. I hope it is as simple as an o-ring or two. Don't know where they (o-rings) are but we are going to try to get a mechanic with some experience in these matters to come down and take a look at it. Thanks for the reply.
