Well, my father and I collectively own a Farmall Super A, but since he wont let me rip the belly mower off, and a few other things, I've decided to buy my own tractor. I really dont want a Farmall A. My requirements are:

PTO

3 point Hitch

Front and rear hydraulics

I need to be able to operate the hydraulics without turning on the PTO

Wide- Front design

Common, easy to find parts for

It doesnt have to be collectable, I just need a working tractor. Can anyone reccomend something?

Get a Farmall 300 utility or 300 Row crop... Live hydraulics, live pto, wide front available on row crop models, standard on utility models. Some come with 2pt hitch that easily converts to a three point, otherwise add on a 3 pt hitch from Saginaw tractor. Some models also have powersteering as an option but that's not always needed. The rowcrop version of this tractor can be found relatively cheap, in good mechanical condition($1200 to 2500 depending on paint). The utility version will cost more though.

It all depends on what you want to do with the tractor.

Farmalls are by far the best money you could spend if you your in the right place at the right time. JD's are too much $$, a Ford may be what you are looking for if you don't want to modify anything. They have 3 pt hitches and wide front ends

What type of HP are you looking for. Where in the US are you located. Cost is obviously an issue. Do you really need a 3 pt hitch. What are you going to use it for.

Well, I just need a small tractor to piddle around with, do small dirt grading, and I'm planting a 10 acre garden, so it needs to pull a plow and disk, and cultivators. The M series is a tiny bit too large. But I have a question, and I know I'll sound like an idiot- What does 'live pto' and 'live hydraulics' mean?

If Your around Alabama, I know of an H (Next smaller than the M) for $1,500 with a set of drag disks...both in good cond. paint bad though. Also a I-4, is much smaller than M but same engine as H...just looks smaller. It's a great tractor(not 3 pt though). Its $1800. Live Hyd. run off the engine instead of trans-pto. If I have this right...Live PTO will work independent of your gears. With my M if I put my cluch in the PTO stops...With newer tractors you can shift gears while and the PTO still turns. It's not a big deal to me cause I can start off in 4th with an engaged PTO without a problem.
