How does motor oil get into the crankcase of a Farmall M and what do you have to do to correct this.

I have a number of old tractors of different vintage. Most of them have oil in the crank-case. The ones that DO have oil in there seem to out last the ones that don't. Even at todays oil prices it makes economic sense to lubricate the crankshaft since the cost of bearings and gaskets are much more than that of oil. Hope this is helpful.

Just ahead of the distributor is a 3 inch diameter wingnut type cap. Thats how motor oil gets into the crank case. Now what you mean by correcting this I'm not sure. If you don't want oil in the crank case you can either drain whats in there or don't put any in.

The crankcase is where oil belongs,do you need to know how to add oil, or how to drain oil, or how much oil the crankcase holds?BillJ

I'M SORRY ABOUT ALL THE CONFUSION,I MEAN I PUT OIL INTO THE CRANKCASE AND THEN BY SOME MEANS ITS GETTING BACK IN THE GEAR OIL. I CAN'T KEEP OIL IN THE CRANKCASE!

If you are speaking of engine oil getting into the transmission, that is not possible. You will have to be more clear. Do you by chance have a live hydraulic pump?

In all seriousness, sounds like you have a rear seal that is leaking.Im guessing but by "getting in gear oil"You mean that it is leaking from where the belly pump is,right?the only way oil can come out of the engine is if you drain it from the bottom of the oil pan,you have a seal or gasket leaking,or as suggested youre smoking like a freight train! There is no way that oil from the engine is getting in the gear box!
