When I was 14-15 I used an old Farmall A to get to my uncles farms to help them on the farms, This same tractor was my mothers 1st on the home farm. I recently purchased this "41 - A" and want to restore it for my mothers birthday next year, she will be 75. Problem is now that the mechanicals are all done, along with all new rubber, I can't find a body shop within 40 miles who will paint it, there reason is we don't do tractors! I want this tractor to be better then new, Have even thought about using some pearl in the upper portion to give it some "shimmer". All the trim is being done in Brass, Exhaust stack, steering shaft, front steering links, air stack. You get the point.... I even offered one person whatever it would cost so he would not loose a nickle..... He refused!!!!? I understand their point, so have decided to paint it myself. I thought that in this small Wi town I would not have a problem, where you go to the IH dealer and they call you by name, or when you walk into any buisness and they call you by name. Is it that hard to find people to paint your rigs elsewhere in the US? Thanks

has anyone ever noticed that the cards that a kid makes with coppier paper and crayons is more special to the mom than a halmark--I know it is true with my mom
The reason is is that it has their own touch--
your tractor will be the same way fix it nice but not so nice that your scareed to use it- a tractor is only at home if is used what it is meant for- after working with a tractor you begin to think of it as an old pal
just a comment for you to think about

How sad...A guy is presented with a perfect opportunity to learn a little about one of his chosen hobbies, and chooses to moan about how unfair it is he can't get someone else to do his work. Isn't restoring tractors by our own efforts what this is all about???

There isn't a person here who was born knowing how to paint a tractor, but based on what we see in pictures and at shows, there a lot of guys with the determination to learn. They enjoy the greatest rewards...the sense of accomplishment of a job well done.

Quitcherbitchin and grasp the opportunity!

Thanks to George M, I did have thoughts of doing it myself but was so bent on perfection for my mother I wanted only the best, Remember I did all the mechanicals, complete engine rebuild, as well front to rear every bolt, nut and washer and all that they hold. The Local NAPA man has been trying to convince me for over a month to do it my self and happened upon the post this am before he came to work and thought it might be me, so after a long talk and the offer of any help I may need, he ordered me everything I need for this as well as his advise. I thank him - NAPA - and most of all George M. for convicing me I can do it and I will. A - MAN Thanks to all!

Attaboy!! Nowyertalkin!! I'll bet, in the end, it will be the best paint job Mom could have imagined. Everyone wins on this one...and you will have one more skill in your bag of tricks. Please let us all see the results when it is done.

Here in central Ohio, local vocational school ag and / or auto body classes will paint or repair virtually anything for the cost of parts & materials.

I agree. I go to a vocational school(EHOVE, in NC ohio), and the auto body class has a deere in there painting it right now. The instructor says he wishes more people would bring tractors in, it gives them a chance to work with heavy guage steel.

In Southeast Mi, a guy just quite doing them. He would take down each piece and sandblast. Even the sawtooth throttle's. He did the most amazing paint jobs I have ever seen. He now only deals in Farmall parts.

We have always done our own painting as far back as I can remember. Small family farmers usually don't have the extra cash to pay someone else to do things like that. Anyways, we have had good luck with everything we have painted. All it takes is time and patience. The more time you spend with prep work - sanding, priming, resanding, body filler, etc. - the better it will look. Also, I recommend using a hardener in your paint, it will really bring out the shine and make for a long lasting paint job.

A good place to start is to ask any questions you might have on the new body work board here at ytmag. I'm sure there are lots of helpful folks that spend time there.

I'm no expert at painting, but you can sure email me anytime if you have a question and I will do my best to help out. For pics of my work, click on the link below.

We are having the same problem getting someone to do bodywork and paint on a 41 Studebaker. Me and my Dad are reconditioning it and would like a little bit of help. We live in one of the fastest growing places in the US, Castle Rock Colo. and it is virtually impossible to hire and keep employees. From what I found out body/paint folks are in high demand and there is an infinite supply of dented Hondas. So they just do not want to talk to us. My 2 cents. Steve
I do not know what to do now, I think we bit off more than we can chew!

I have heard of this before in MO. You would think a body shop would welcome the opportunity and would be some easy money compared to the high tech work on todays cars/trucks and their flimsy body panels. I guess it is like when I recently tried to get someone to do a small addition on my house...no one wanted to mess with it or they wanted double what it should have cost as they had more work than they needed. I have seen some employees of the bigger shops who would do jobs on the side to make some extra money so you might investigate that route.

I started painting tractors about three years ago because I could do it cheaper than the dealer, if you want to do it yourself go ahead, it isn't that hard and there is plenty of help on here to get you through any problems. I wish you were in SE IA because I would love to paint a tractor like yours, the chance to paint a tractor and do it right regardless of expence is a rarety when dealing with farmers.

We have an old Ford tractor and my son's highschool Ag. class has fixed the clutch and has asked if they can paint it. They only charge for the cost of supplies as the kids are learning to fix and restore. We don't expect perfection but I think they will do a good job. Ask your county if any schools offer this. It's a place to start.

Check out Pilot Knob Restorations in Galena, IL. They advertise in RED POWER that they do tractor repainting. From the looks of a show tractor they had at the Red Power Round-Up in Sandwich Summer of 2000, They do Real Nice work.

I had no problem haveing my Super M painted by a local body shop. I live in Southwest Michigan across the lake from Chicago. I also live in a small town and it is a shame that the people by you won't do the work. I have two shops to choose from that do all kinds of things. I even seen lawn furniture in there once.

There is a body shop where I live that prefers to paint tractors over doing body work. He is expensive but does an excellent job. A premium paint job will cost $1500 or more.
