installed one on a 45 H 12 years ago. must have close to 900 hours on it. bought everything needed at bates Corporation in bourbon, In. bought a new pump (super h/300), used timing gear cover for same, port block for line to connect to pump. bougth line locally when i knew what I needed. used the belly pump for resivoir, just fill it as full as you can.

I have an M&W live pump on my '47 H. Rather than make the mods on the oil filter, you can install a delco distributor that is vertical instead of horizontal.

Also, the pump from a SM won't fit. The pump from a 300 will fit but you have to change the timing cover.

I don't know about the W-4, but it should fit as it's the same engine.

Good luck !

I forgot about the reservoir...I used my belly pump but took out the pump and put a steel plate over it to increase the capacity. I have a 3pt hitch, a loader and power steering all running from my pump and have no problems.

I installed a M&W live hydraulic pump several years ago on my 1941 H. I had done some research prior to that, and I believe that the pump from a Super H or 300 will fit. I have since found out from reading parts books, that IH had a live hydraulic kit for the W4 tractors. A pump from one of those kits will be a direct fit. Because of the length of the live pump, the long oil filter housing may interfere with the spark plug wires. I had to install a remote oil filter, and I also had to grind the oil pump drive bulge in the block for pump clearance. It is possible to use the original belly pump as a reservoir, but it may not hold enough oil for use with a loader. An open center control valve will also be needed. It is good practice to install a remote spin-on filter in the return line from your control valve. I use an all hydraulic loader with this tractor, and I have been using the live pump since 1979 with no problems.
