I was helping my neighbor haul big bales and he has a new to him 656. Twice the gear shift would hang up as in two gears and you had to line up the linkage above the battery to get it free. How do you fix this? Is it expensive? Thanks for any info

I owned a 656 for many years and I think you fellows have missed the real problem of John L. & friend. I am very aware of the problems you can encounter with improper clutch and torque amplifier adjustments. There is three linkages come from the gear selector lever shaft. They go behind the battery to the transmission. These linkages are from left to right; 1st and reverse, 2nd and 3rd, 4th and 5th. The shaft has a pin aprox. 5/16" and when centered in shaft, protrudes 1/4 " each way. As you slide the selector lever through the neutral position the pin in the shaft alines with various linkages. Three things can this pin. 1. It can come loose and fall out. 2. It can come part way out, thus the shaft will not slide. 3. The ends wear on this pin and when worn enough may for example not bring the tractor out 3rd gear but shifter lever will put it in 4th. You probably need a new pin and possibly a gear selector shaft as hole in shaft is likely worn. I had to replace both. Having said all of this I will say that improper adjustment of clutch and torque amplifier have caused this. It causes tractor to shift hard thus excessive wear on linkage.

My 656 is stuck in 4th & 5th. When it gets to neutral it won't move sideways. We've got it apart, but don't know what we're looking for. Any ideas? Thanks. Rick

John, your problem probably is coming from the t.a. not being adjusted properly. Get a manual or go to a shop where a friendly mechanic should be able to show you how it is done. if you don't get the t. a. clutch to release properly it will always cause this problem. I know I worked on those tractors since they came out. If you have a problem finding some one e-mail me I'll explain as best as I can.

Ours always does that. Does it 'lock' in High AND Low range, or just one? If ours is in high range, you'd have to shove the shifter to get it in netural.

Do a search of the archives as I have posted how I rebuilt the linkage, our 544 still shifts very positive now 9 months later. Post back here if you have any questions after that.
Hope this helps.

Well, I have operated two different 656's and a 544(same shifting setup) on a regular basis and all of them seen to be like that. Does not seem to be a problem once you get familiar with the tractor. Until you get used to it, just make sure the tractor is stopped completely, idle down a little bit, and make sure the clutch is all the way to the floor. I imagine tightening/replacing linkage would work, but have never done it. Really, I think once you get used to the tractor it is fine, unless alot of different people are operating the tractor or you are trying to fix it all up. Just my opinion though.

WE HAD TWO OF THESE TRACTORS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THIS IS A CHARACTERISTIC OF THE 656. IF I REMEMBER WE ADJUSTED THE LINKAGE AND THEN LIVED WITH THE PROBLEM.
