The PTO shafts on my '48 Super A have begun to turn slowly even when the PTO is not engaged. I have added new gear lube and even thinned it a bit by adding a portion of lighter viscosity oil. I don't think it is tempurature related as it happens even in 80 degree weather. Why has my PTO become possessed?

For what it's worth-I've seen many older Farmalls do the same thing. ( The ones without live power ).

There is a pilot bushing in the countershaft and it might be galling to the pilot shaft of the PTO.

I have an IH Cub Lo-boy (same as farmall cub, only lower) that does the same thing. As a heavy equipment tech student, my guess is that the oil although it is a lube, creates a micro-thin layer between the two shafts where they meet, much like the crank bearings in a car. (you know how they are really close to each other?) that would create enough friction to turn the shaft. kinda like a fluid coupler. Hope this helps!! Any other questions you have on your tractor, feel free to email me. Kippster

My A does it too. Also I had an M that did the same thing. Something just has a little friction inside there to keep things moving.
