Do you have the obsession?

I am so glad I found this site. Since I left my family's farm 7 years ago my obsession for tractors has grown to almost unhealthy proportions. I collect old brochures and tractor ads. I attend every antique show I possibly can. Some nights my wife gets worried when I am not home and when she calls my cell phone she finds me sitting in my car at the local dealer lot. I stop on the road and watch tractors working in the field and close my eyes to hear, feel and smell those days gone by when I myself spent countless hours wrestling the steering wheel, working levers, talking on the two-way radio, pumping diesel and cleaning the dust bowl on the filter before nightfall running. In my college fraternity we used to sit up until 4:00 in the morning talking about the day we could farm on our own and what kind of tractors we would buy. Now, I sit around with my fellow office workers and all they want to talk about is golf, the lawnmower they bought at Lowe's or the best place to get their oil changed. My wife says I am crazy. It has affected our marriage. I impulsively bought a '40 H from a man without telling her. (As a result I had to buy the sofa she had been saving for and help paint the living room. I am still trying to decide if the H was worth having to paint the walls...yeah, it was) Is there any therapy? Maybe YTMag needs to start a discussion page titled "Support Group." SERIOUSLY, I also need to know if there are any aftermarket rims that will fit a Little Genius plow for an H. I pulled the one my dad used out of the fencerow.

These are all funny but true symptoms. I first drove a farmall B around age 12. Now I got 5 of them. What I find myself doing now is building tractors out of parts - the rougher the better. It is expensive but also rewarding. Must be similar to climbing a mountain or running a marathon. My wife tells me to a least slow down.

Yep, I got it too. Every spare dime goes into something red. (and not for repairs either) Gotta love it. Working on buying another IH tractor this week, hopefully will close the deal by next weekend so I can have something to work on over Thanksgiving vacation. If not, I'll have to get the F-12 and F-14 out of storage again and do some disking or drag the yard again.

Farmallitis?? I dunno what that is. I do know that my garage is full of red tractors and red paint runs in my veins. :-p

You mean to say you have Farmallitis. If you look at the archives in this site, you will see that many others have it, some mild and some real bad. There is no cure, only brief respites after the purchase of yet another Farmall. I have 9 of them and still get twinges for more every so often. Especially so if I see an excellent original one from the 60's. One look at a clean 1456 will give me a full blown relapse. The only known antidote is dont look at them, but instead look at a JD 2 cylinder tractor. If there ever was a turnoff they have to be it. Enough said.

My father at one time had a G John Deere. He traded it for an M Farmall. He said it was the biggest mistake he ever made. He spent the rest of his life regretting that trade.

Thanks, I have a picture of me sitting in my dad's lap when I was 18 months old on an 856. So I know what you mean when you talk about the relapse around a 14...Well since this complication is not going away I guess I will just need to keep reading this page.

I think you will make it. When you start talking addictions, buying and working on old tractors is pretty benign. Much more healthy than drugs, alcohol and wild women (not that I know anything about those things).

Just prepare yourself for the costs involved. For every dollar you spend on your tractors, be prepared to spend 3 dollars on things your wife wants.

I would caution against buying tractors on the sly though. Be up front and honest and be ready to bribe her by allowing her to buy what she wants. Soon she will beg you to buy new tractors.

Another tactic is to have several Farmalls of different sizes scattered around the place. If by chance she asks you about a recent purchase you can always say "I've had that one for years. You remember, that was the one parked out back forever." They loose track after the 3rd or 4th one.

Good luck and enjoy...BB
