The more I looked around the more I found great deals on old tractors. The problem isn't if its a great deal but if we can afford to buy the tractor and satisfy (gifts and shopping) the the women in our lives after we buy another tractor. Then if you can afford what they want the next thing is the kids...then if after you satisfy everyone...and have enough money and time left to fix the tractor up right...go ahead

I had been getting the "are you working on the tractor" lecture constantly until I bought the kids new ATVs and my wife a new car. Now I don't get that from them anymore! It cost me over $25,000 to buy myself a $700.00 tractor...I think I need to re-think the relative cost of the tractor... :)

I bought (stole) my 340 with loader and back blade for $1000. The wife immediately went out and bought $2000 worth of furniture. I told her to try and plow snow with her $2000 furniture. She told me to try and watch TV from the seat of my new tractor. And so it goes, and goes, and goes, and goes..... ..... ....you'd think we'd know better.

Welcome to the world of the "SET" tax (Spoual Equality Tax). The rate is much higher than anything the government charges..... ..... ..

Worth every penny though ..... ... ;-)

Agree! I'm newly into this but starting to get some looks whenever I come home w/ a box or when the UPS man pulls up. My H is over at my Dad's house so I do have to get clearance to get over there and spend some time...he's the one w/ the Barn, etc....H won't fit in my garage!

Getting tired of not having it right there where I can slip out to the garage and work on it...I'd look for a Cub or A but, MAN, people sure want an Arm and a leg for those!!!

Todd, let's find one close by!!

Well, I don't know about the rest of you guys, but my wife is the one that thought I needed a hobby and pressed me to get the H I've got. In fact, she has already found another one for me to refurbish when I get this one done! All we have to do is go to MO next spring and pick it up. So far, the original price of $850 for a 46 H and a few $$ in parts and cleaning stuff is all I've had to put out. Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm loving it.

Shoot...you got out cheap. I've been keeping up with the cost of restoring my Cub and Super H and I come up with $206,000 and some change (like $5500 or so), but I get to finance it over 30 years (house with a pool for the wife and kids, I just get to clean the pool). It does have 2 acres so I can hide / store more tractors.

That's why I don't get too worried about the cost that much when I buy one. By the time you get the cost of parts in it, and add in the cost of appeasement of the spouse, the original purchase price is pretty insignificant.

When you think about it, a lot of guys spend as much or more on golf or fishing or whatever....better to have a husband happily working out in the shed, rather than off on some trip.....right?..... ....

Yep I know what you mean. I bought Old Smokey M for $875 delivered. Mrs. Red never said a word. The very next week she wandered into the Lazy Boy furniture store. She didn't wander out until $3,600 was spent.

Then to add salt to the wound, I bought that half M that was on photo ads recently for $325 delivered, mainly for the tires and rims. Mrs. Red came home with a $400 DVD/VCR this past weekend. :(

I have to agree. No wife or kids here, but the cost of going across the country to pick a tractor up and bring it home is what could kill my finances! Time to start looking for deals closer to home.

The first one I rebuilt was my wife's tractor when she started driving about ten years of age. It was a Ferguson TO30, the "Gray Menace". The great thing about that was I actually had permission to "go out and get what you need..."
Man, I thought I had died and gone to NAPA! The next one was a freebie too, the '45 "Gift H". It was worn out and should have been parted, but there she sat rusting away in the pasture, beckoning me to rescue her. Many dollars later we are about ready for paint, and I know she will jump on and rip down the street when it's done! Ah, bliss! Hang in there fellow tinkerers. P.S. The Fergy rebuild cost me a trip to Hawaii...
