I emailed the guy with the green IH and he replied...

Dear farmalltodd:

No real good reason. The only two I had at the time were that (1) I
really liked the green color and John Deere tractors and (2) the IH dealer
near us went out of business and the next closest dealer was a John Deere
dealer where I could get some generic service supplies (oil, paint,
hydraulic cylinder rebuild kits, etc.). At the time, I was not really into
preservation. If I were to redo a tractor today (which I am about to do
with a 1964 Ford Industrial with a loader) I would preserve original parts
and design as much as possible.

You could repaint it IH/farmall red if you wanted.

Hearing about John Deere Red Paint clears up some of my questions. Last month, I found two quarts of "John Deere Red" paint in a shelf down at the farm. This was genuine John Deere Paint, but I had no idea what it could have been used on.

Gentlemen, Remember, JD did offer colors including red on some of their tractors in the 1930s. I have seen pictures of an A or B painted red which was supposed to be the original color. It looked better red! Also, the early JD wagon gear were red. I have one that is still red with "John Deere" in black. They had a great idea but went astray!

I totally agree, thats why I wanted to ask him why he didn't go red. I think it shows how the American Farmers of today and the past may not care about the color but do about quality! I wish I had the green machine, it would be a great conversation peice.

It's the reverse of what I have threatened to do to a green one. Every year the local JD club fixes up a tractor and chances it off. Every year I buy tickets and tell them that when I win it I will give it some class by repainting it red. They laugh because the chances of me winning it are pretty slim, but one of these years I may get lucky.....
