I just bought a 1950 Cub that hasn't been started in about 4 years. I tried to start it last night, and it doesn't seem to have any fire. I think the magneto is dead. Can anyone tell me how hard it is to rebuild a mag? Thanks Andy

When you cleaned the points and replaced the condenser, you didn't by chance in tightening the wires in there, pull them around to short on the case did you? Can easily happen. Reason I say that is you said you got a shock before installing it. Once installed it becomes grounded, so no more fire, get it? Now then if you want to go a little further, remove the cap, the four screws that hold the black phenolic piece to the top of mag. You will find a tab that sits against the brass button on the coil. Make sure they are nice and clean. Clean up with a finger nail file, so they are nice and shiny. Check coil cap, which it is, for any cracks, if none found replace. That mag if it has a good snap with the impulse should kind of make you stand right on your tippy toes. With it is clamped in a vice by the lower mounting lug, a wire installed in the coil output terminal, and snapped past the impulse, should have a very nice blue spark from the wire held about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the vise. Good luck.

I filed the points and put a different condensor in the mag and it will shock me now when I turn it by hand, but when I put it on the tractor it will not shock me and had no fire when I crank the tractor over. Does anyone have any Ideas?

If you get spark off the tractor then the magneto works. Have you checked the impulse coupling. This spring loaded device is supposed to "snap" when it passes a firing point on the engine. Turn the engine slowly with the crank until you hear a "snap" from the magneto housing. It should be firing just a hair past the place where the marker and the notch on the fan pully match. You may have to turn it another half turn to get to the NO. 1 firing position. If no snap you won't get a spark.
Rebuilding a magneto is difficult and for the Cub J magneto I am not even sure parts are still available. But there are magneto rebuilders advertised on some of the Cub web sites.

Setting for 4 years may have caused the points to glaze over. I would try burnishing the points to remove any possible glaze & see if spark returns.
