I just purchased a 1945 Farmall A. It has a snow plow that is operated by an exhaust lift system. The tractor sat fo two years and the lift dont work. Anybody have any ideas, or manuals on it that they can e-mail pictures of operation.

I'll assume the engine itself is in basicly decent shape. The most likely problem is the pressure valve on top of the exhause manifold. Run the engine wide open and latch the lift lever back. What happens? It should be able to stall the engine. If not, where is the exhaust coming out? Out the exhaust pipe, fix the pressure valve. Out anywhere else, fix the leak. If no leaks, either something is mechanicly jammed or the control valve is blocking. The control valve is near the oil filter. Corrosion can cause problems. There is also a neoprene washer in there that can cause problems if it is swolled or otherwise deteriorated.

Have little experience wit exhaust lifts, but as I remember, they were pretty marginal unless everything was in top condition. Engine must be in tip top shape -especially valves, and compression. Check all exhaust plumbing - any leaks will prevent the system from operating. Check the divertion valve - if it leaks, ditto. Check the cylinder for leaks - is it frozen up?
Make sure the linkage, cables, whatever are free and operating properly. Throttle up engine when using the lift too.
