Has anyone ever heard of or experienced an 86 series getting stuck in high range but range lever being in park? This past spring I was working with our 1486 and stopped quickly to move an object out of the way. I guess I didnot pull up completely out of high range before going to park. As I let out on the clutch the tractor tried to move forward but was being loaded because I believe the park mechanism was engaged. We worked with the range shifter for about 30 minutes and finally got it out of park and high range. Pulled the seat and cover plate out today and can't find anything obvious. The ball linkages are a little wore but not anything out of the ordinary for 4400 hrs. Any comments? I did notice that the bolt that holds the arm going into the tranny on the range shifter does rotate when you move the range lever back and forth. Is this common?

Hi. Our 1086 has done this numerous times over the years. It happens just the way you describe it and for the same reason, shifting too quick and to close around the shift quadrant. Veryyy frustrating. My father always starts condeming the choice of buying a 1086 over a 4440 at these special times (now we have both). We have become proficient at fishing around through the battery cover hole with a heavy piece of wire with a hook at the end. We pull the tranny into neutral with the wire. Sometimes helps to have a person in the tractor to put their foot on the clutch if things are binding. That bolt you talked about will work itself loose. Our old girl has 11,000 hours and has done stop and go front end loader work most of its life. The valve cover has never been off the motor, just bearings on the crank as a matter of maintenance. Everything behind the motor is a different story though... . Still love the old girl.

Michael

Dad and I think we fixed it today. The bolt holding that arm on loosened up and that allowed the arm to work on that shaft that goes down into the tranny.(Arm is keyed to the shaft) We turned the arm over and put a little longer bolt to get alittle more clamp force and it took out all the loose slop. I think it should be okay now. P.S. To get good access at this you have to take the seat out and the cover plate underneath. A lot of work but we needed to do it anyway to replace all the padding in the cab and work on the hydraulic seat.
